K & Q Chess Club celebrates outstanding results at the Gold Coast Junior Chess Championship, including a complete U8 trophy sweep, U10 Champion, Best Girl awards, and strong performances from young players competing above their age groups.

We are delighted to celebrate another outstanding performance by our young players at the Gold Coast Junior Chess Championship held last weekend. Across multiple age divisions, K&Q students demonstrated exceptional skill, determination, and sportsmanship, earning major honours while continuing to showcase the strength of our long-term junior development program.
๐ Derek L โ U8 Champion
๐ Elena C โ U8 =2nd and Runner-Up on the countback
๐ Ivy Z โ U8 =2nd and Third Place on the countback
๐ Kalista L โ U8 =2nd and Best Girl Award
The Under-8 division was particularly special, with K&Q players capturing all four major trophies available. It was a remarkable achievement and a testament to the hard work of the students, families, and coaching team.

๐ Brian Y โ U10 Champion
๐ Aniya M โ Best Girl Award
A special congratulations to Brian for an excellent tournament performance and well-deserved championship title. Aniya once again demonstrated her fighting spirit and consistency, earning the Best Girl Award in a highly competitive field.
Kevin C and Alden S also delivered strong performances, finishing tied for second place on 6 points. After countback calculations, they were ultimately ranked fourth and fifth respectively. While they narrowly missed the podium, their results reflected a very high standard of play and competitive resilience throughout the event.

One of the most encouraging aspects of the tournament was seeing several of our younger players stepping up to compete in higher age divisions. Derek L, Ivy Z, Jasper W, Alex C, and Louis Z all participated in the U10 section despite being younger than many of their opponents. Competing "up an age group" requires courage, confidence, and a willingness to embrace challenges, and each of them gained valuable tournament experience.
We are equally proud of Allen Y and George S, who competed in the combined U12โU18 division against significantly older and higher-rated players. Both students showed excellent fighting spirit and performed admirably against strong opposition, demonstrating maturity beyond their years.
At K&Q Chess Club, we believe these experiences often contribute more to long-term development than short-term results.
Another highlight of the tournament was the outstanding performance of our female players. In the U8 division, Elena C, Ivy Z, and Kalista L captured three of the four available trophies while competing in a mixed field against boys. Aniya continued that tradition in the U10 division by securing the Best Girl Award.
These young girls demonstrated confidence, resilience, and determination, becoming inspiring role models for younger players within our club community.
At K&Q Chess Club, we focus on developing young chess players from the very beginning. Many of our students start learning chess with us at four, five, or six years old. Over time, they progress from local Brisbane junior tournaments to state championships, Australian National Championships, and even World Youth Chess Championships.
Our coaches do much more than teach chess. As mentors, parents, experienced tournament competitors and organizers, we understand the challenges that both children and families face throughout the chess journey. We work closely with parents to help students develop:
These are life skills that extend far beyond the chessboard.
Success in chess is never determined by a single game or one tournament. Every lesson, every training session, every victory, and every defeat contributes to a child's growth. Our coaching philosophy emphasizes patience, perseverance, and long-term development. We encourage students to care about results, but not to be defined by them.
Winning is exciting.
Learning is essential.
Character is everything.
Over the years, many K&Q students have gone on to win state and national titles, earn FIDE ratings and titles, and represent Australia internationally. Yet our proudest achievements are often the confidence, maturity, and resilience our students develop along the way.
At K&Q Chess Club, we are not simply creating a class, a hobby, or an extracurricular activity. We are building a community โ a community of students, parents, and coaches who:
The trophies are worth celebrating. But the courage to challenge stronger opponents, the resilience to overcome setbacks, and the character built through the journey are what truly define success.
Congratulations to All Winners and Participants.
We are incredibly proud of every student who represented K&Q Chess Club this weekend. Whether earning a trophy, competing up an age group, or challenging stronger opponents, every player demonstrated the values that define our club: courage, perseverance, sportsmanship, and continuous growth.
The journey continues, and the best is yet to come.
Looking forward to many more and greater achievements from the upcoming Queensland Juniors!
