Chess Bringing the Community Together at Warrigala 2026

Some days remind us why we teach chess.

The King & Queen Chess Club was honoured to be invited to the 2026 Warrigala School Fete, hosted by Warrigal Road State School and the P&C Association.

Throughout the day, our chess booth welcomed children, parents, former students and members of the local community to enjoy friendly games of chess together.

From the very first game to the final move of the afternoon, one thing became clear — chess has a unique way of bringing people together.

Our Chess Corner Never Stopped

As the carnival began, our chess tables quickly filled with eager players.

Many young chess enthusiasts made a special trip to our booth after hearing about the event through friends and social media. Some came for a quick game, while many stayed for hours, happily challenging new opponents and learning from every game they played.

Before long, every chessboard was occupied.

"Can I play one more game?"

Watching their concentration, determination and genuine love for chess reminded us that great players are built on passion long before they achieve results. We truly believe that this enthusiasm will take them a long way — not only across the chessboard, but throughout life.

Wonderful Reunions

One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was reconnecting with many of our former students.

Some stopped by simply to say hello. Some challenged us to another friendly game. Others stayed for a chat before continuing to enjoy the carnival with their families and friends.

Many of the children we first met years ago are now in Year 9 and Year 10. Some have since moved to academically demanding schools, including Queensland Academy, and no longer have as much time to play chess regularly.

Yet seeing them return to visit reminded us that while lessons may finish, the friendships, memories and values built through chess continue for many years.

As coaches, there is no greater reward than watching students grow — not only as chess players, but as confident young people.

Chess Connecting Schools and Communities

One of the most rewarding parts of the day was seeing children from many different schools and chess clubs sharing the same chessboards.

• —Beginners playing their very first games.
• —Experienced junior players analysing positions together.
• —Teenagers returning for another challenge.
• —Parents learning alongside their children.

On every board, there was respect, curiosity and friendship. That is exactly what community chess is all about.

Chess creates conversations between strangers, friendships between children, and connections between families from different backgrounds. Events like Warrigala remind us that chess belongs not only in clubs and tournaments — but also in schools, neighbourhoods and local communities.
